Music Man

Sam spent the mornings for two weeks attending the Columbia Public Schools summer music program.  The first two hours of the day he learned new pieces on his trombone.  I loved this because it was really the first practice he had done all summer and was a great way to keep up with his instrument.
The second two hours of the day he got to choose elective classes.  Sam chose garage band and beginning guitar.  I think garage band was his favorite or it was definitely the one he talked about the most.  The kids get to make music on a computer application and Sam loves working on computers.  I think he also enjoyed his beginning guitar class.  He even gave us a small concert one night of what he had learned.  I don't think it sparked him to want more lessons now but maybe in the future he will.
Thursday of the second week, the students had a concert for parents.  The band, orchestra and choir performed the pieces they had been working on in their main class.  I was impressed with how they were able to pull together three concert pieces in two weeks especially since most of these kids have only been playing their instruments for one year.  I think this was a great experience for Sam and we are lucky to have a school district that values fine arts education and provided this camp free of charge to everyone.
All smiles after his concert.
